We are thrilled to welcome Katy Gunning to our team as our new Friends Co-ordinator.
Through our work we have found there is a real need to help people find and join local groups for social activities to feel part of the local community and to make new friends – particularly older people with learning disabilities, and to enable the community to welcome people with a learning disability into their group, rather than into segregated groups for disabled people.
With the generous support from Frome Mencap, Frome Lions and Frome Carnival we have recruited a Friends Co-ordinator to assist Frome based people, with learning disabilities and of all ages, to attend local leisure activities and to develop their social networks.
Katy meets people at risk of isolation, finds out what their interests are in order to find local activity groups and clubs which match those interests. Katy then meets with the club offering support for them to welcome someone with a learning disability to the group and supports the individual until they are comfortable to attend by themselves.
As you can imagine, Katy’s new role is keeping her very busy. She has already been in contact with over 50 people and there are lots of new friendships being made. Katy has revived a Skittles club at the Ring O’Bells and has plans for another, along with a new Film Club. Well done Katy!
