Openstorytellers are absolutely delighted to have received Arts Council England funding for our ‘Lift Off’ project. This project draws on the great success of the Fanny Fust project, where our storytellers researched, devised and performed (and so much more!) the fascinating story of an 18th Century heiress who had severe learning disabilities.
Lift Off is the first phase of a two phase project, and in itself has two strands – with the final aim of touring the Fanny Fust show alongside Peter the Wild Boy.
One objective is for the Storytelling Company to hone their management skills, in order to be able to produce and promote their shows and to arrange and schedule touring. The group are looking forward to taking part in professional workshops around Marketing and Producing, Tour Booking, Finance and Tour Delivery, then using these skills to manage their company to the very best of their ability.
The second key focus is for the storytellers to develop the story of Peter the Wild Boy, which is another story from disability history about a young man who was found living in a forest in Germany and was brought to England as a ‘curiosity’ to live in Kensington Palace. The group are working with the story to devise a performance, using poetry, movement and storytelling.
As our member Tim (who also worked on the successful application to ACE) says “We feel excluded, our capabilities are underestimated and our potential is unrecognised. We want to change these attitudes. Our shows have real potential to shift this culture.”
We are all very excited to share in the development of these captivating stories and look forward to the prospect of a tour of the south west. The Storytelling Company blog regularly, so to keep you up to date with their project you can see their blog page here https://openstorytellers.blogspot.com/, and also do keep your eye out on our social media for news and updates – the group are going to be building their Facebook skills https://www.facebook.com/OpenStoryTellers/ and getting to grips with Instagram too!
